Hello, kidlit friends! We’re excited to announce our new initiative Reviews for Reviews, created to support kidlit authors.

We are your hosts, Bri Lawyer, Ellen Meeks, Jessie Raspbury, Julie Hauswirth, and Maria Pinero Pope.

Here’s the deal:

📚  Review a kidlit book for a chance to win a review (critique) of your PB manuscript and an AMA zoom call!

Here’s the goal:

🤝 Support kidlit authors by helping their books gain more visibility. Reviews are incredibly important, and your reviews really do make a difference!

Here’s how it works:

🗓️ On the first day of each month, the Reviews for Reviews post will be live on X.

📝 Any time throughout the month, leave an honest review for a kidlit book you read and loved. The review can be left on Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, and/or Amazon. We encourage you to review books that have been published in the last two years.

📖💬 Once you’ve left your review, come back to our post and leave a comment letting us know which book you reviewed. Please state the title of the book, the author/illustrator, and where you left your review. Example: “I left a review for (book title) by (author/illustrator) on (Goodreads).“ Entry won’t count without that info. Use the hashtag #reviews4reviews to find the post.

📈  You can review as many books as you’d like, but leave a separate comment for each review in order for it to be counted as an additional entry. The more books you review, the higher your chance of winning!

🎉 After the last day of the month, we will randomly select a winner to receive a review (critique) of a PB manuscript 700 words or less AND a 20 minute AMA zoom call with the critiquer. This review and AMA zoom will come from either Bri Lawyer, Ellen Meeks, Jessie Raspbury, Julie Hauswirth, or Maria Piñero Pope.

📬 If you are chosen as a winner, your critiquer will contact you with how to submit your manuscript and schedule a time to zoom. To help you decide which manuscript you’d like critiqued, see our strengths below:

🌟 We can’t wait to see which books you’re loving! Our first Reviews for Reviews will be January 2025. Mark your calendars, read some good books, and get your reviews ready! 🌟

FAQ

Q: What is the last possible minute I can comment that I left a review?

A: You have until midnight PST on the last day of every month to comment.

Q:How long until we find out the winner?

A: A few days after the end of each month.

Q: If I leave a review on Amazon and then a review on goodreads for the same book, does that count as two entries?

A: Yes! Just make sure they are two separate comments.

Q: Do I have to share a screenshot of my review in the comment?

A: No, but you can if you feel so inclined. We are going by the honor system here, however if you are chosen as a winner, we will probably check that you did leave the review you said you left.

Q: You say you “encourage reviewing books published in the last two years”, but can I review an older book?

A: The primary goal of this program is to help authors gain more visibility for their books, and we believe this is most helpful for authors of newer titles. However, we are excited to support the Kidlit community as a whole, so we welcome reviews of older books as well.

Q: I was chosen as a winner! YAY! When will I get my critique and AMA zoom call?

A: That month’s critiquer will be in contact with you to sort out the details.

Q: Will all five critiquers critique the winner’s manuscript each month and be on the zoom call?

A: No, only one. We will rotate months in this order: Bri Lawyer, Ellen Meeks, Jessie Raspbury, Julie Hauswirth, then Maria Pinero Pope.

 Bri:

I’m happy to critique anything you’d like, but I would be most helpful with picture books. I’m better with quirky, humorous stories than with SEL or lyrical stories. I can critique rhyme or prose. I’m comfortable critiquing fiction and informational fiction, but may not be the best to critique non-fiction.

Ellen:

I am good at critiquing SEL, humor, and lyrical picture books, with my specialty being character emotional development and puns. I’m not so good with rhyme.

Jessie:

Humor is my first love, but happy to look at everything! I love rhyme and prose alike. For MG and YA, I’m willing to read the first 10 pages, but please know these are not my specialty!

Maria:

I am excited to offer critiques for picture books ranging from funny to heartfelt in English and Spanish. In the MG space, I would love to critique the first 10 pages and a one-paragraph synopsis. I am not the best for novels in verse, rhyming picture books, or nonfiction across all genres.

Julie:

I’m happy to critique a variety of fiction picture books, from humor to lyrical and everything in between. I’m always excited to help with word choice, page turns, visual humor, and cutting the fluff. Though I am by no means an expert, I am comfortable reviewing rhyme. I’m not the best person to critique non-fiction at this time.
